Engine & Gearbox

This is where this build gets interesting. I am putting a 2012 XR6 Turbo engine and gearbox into this near 50 year old car. This engine will be tuned to around 350rwkw and paired with the ZF 6 Speed Auto to odernize this muscle car and keep it on the road for many years to come. Below are the specification of both engine and gearbox.

Engine Details

  • Engine Type: Ford Barra 270T  sourced from 2012 FG XR6 Turbo

  • Configuration: straight-six engine

  • Displacement: 3984 cc (243 cu in)

  • Cylinder block alloy: Cast iron

  • Cylinder head alloy: Aluminium

  • Power: 270 kW (362 hp) @ 5250 rpm

  • Torque: 533 N·m (393 lb·ft) @ 2000-4750 rp

  • Fuel system

    • Bosch 044 Fuel Pump

    • KPM EV14 Fuel Injectors

  • Turbo Charger: Stock Garrett GT3576R

Gearbox

  • Gearbox Type: ZF 6HP26 sourced from 2012 FG XR6 Turbo

  • 6 Speed Tiptronic

  • PWR Transmission Heat Exchanger

Engine Mounts

  • An old FG LPG engine was used when mocking up the engine mounts. Mark at LMS did a great job and creating this mounts and incorporated them into the new crossmenber. See here for more details on the Front Suspension setup.  The sump of the engine needed to be modified also, see below for more information.

Transmission Crossmember

  • Custom crossmember was created to accomodate the ZF gearbox. The firwall of the Mustang was already moved back considerably in teh LHD-RHD conversion but more clearance was needed for the gearbox.

  • You can see in the pics below that the tunnel had to be cut and modified to allow for this very large gearbox. A hoop was also added to the crossmember for added safety around the leg/seat area.

Engine Sump

  • The original FG engine sump unfortunately won't fit as it has the pickup at the rear of the engine. Because of the steering arms and the crossmember I needed a sump with front pickup. Luckily, the earlier BF series motor has a sump at the front.

  • The BF sump was cut and welded accordingly. A custom oil pickup will also be made.
